Poison Prevention Parents Presentations

CSHP-UCSD's Poison Prevention Awareness seeks to educate the community about the dangers of household poisons. In addition to educating K-6 students at local elementary schools, this educational outreach project has sought out our community's parents for the past four years. The targeted audience was parents, particularly first time parents with pre-K children, who are the most vulnerable to poisoning incidents. With the help of several federally-funded Head Start sites, we were able to provide presentations to parents of low-income families who may not have the resources to educate themselves about household poisons and the actions to take in emergency situations. The presentations provided by our student pharmacists discussed common, yet surprising, poisons such as cleaning supplies, plants, vitamins, and medications. They equipped parents with the knowledge to teach their children how to recognize poisons and keep safe from poisons, and what to do if a poisoning incident were to occur.
