Code Blue Workshop

On November 9, CSHP-UCSD hosted its first educational workshop of the year for its members. The Code Blue Workshop was a critical care workshop where students came to learn about a pharmacist's role in a Code Blue. Drs. Juan Toledo and Katrina Derry, as well as PGY-2 Critical Care Residents Dr. Audrey Bushway and Andrea Bechtold came to give a presentation about Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) in the hospital, and the drugs used in a Code Blue Situation. The students were also able to participate in some hands on Code Blue simulation activities. They learned how to assemble syringes together, make difficult calculations under pressure, and the duties of the pharmacist once they arrive at a Code Blue. After the presentation and some videos, the remainder of the time was spent going through the pharmacists' Code box, what medications were inside, and when to use them. Overall, students appreciated the hands-on experience the faculty and residents provided, and felt better equipped to go on a code in their rotations.
